On March 04, 2021,the U.S. National Security Commission on #IA issued its report on the use of AI systems that some want to call “autonomous.”
The autonomy of AI is subject to debate in civil society, especially regarding its application in the military field. A debate arising from the semantic meaning of the term “autonomy” and the ethical and legal issues that arise from it. As a report by the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence points out, some international states are opposed to Autonomous Lethal Weapon Systems (ALWS). They consider that human intervention, especially in decision-making, is fundamental. While others specify that talking about autonomy on an autonomous system is still illusory and prefer to talk about “automation”, where human action is still required at various levels, as in the case of drones.
Numalis shares this reading of the word autonomy considering that it is inappropriate and that the term automation is more adapted to the reality of AI uses. A good reason to reread our point of view on the subject in our article: “The autonomy of AI: can we really talk about it?“.
